The answer changes with every piece, which is exactly why we've never believed in a single "perfect" fabric. A classic 100% cotton dress asks for something different than a machine washable cotton sweater. A breezy cotton linen blend wants something different than our stretch cotton, built for the days you're moving from a morning meeting straight into a weekend away. So instead of forcing one fabric to do everything, we let each one do the one thing it does best.

Every fabric we choose has a purpose.
Some are picked purely for how they breathe. Others earn their place because of the way they soften with wear, or the way a little stretch changes how a dress feels after eight hours in it. Most of our favorite pieces start with natural fibers: cotton, linen, because there's a comfort and versatility there that's hard to manufacture. Other times, a thoughtfully chosen blend gives us something the natural fiber alone couldn't: easier packing, better wrinkle resistance, a bit more give, all without losing the feel we've built our name on.

Walk through our woven dresses, our eyelets, our gingham tops, and you'll find 100% cotton fabric doing exactly what it's always done: holding a beautiful shape while staying comfortable enough to wear from a 7am coffee run through a 7pm dinner. Our woven cottons are designed to feel polished without ever feeling fussy, crisp enough to hold its own on a warm day, breathable enough that you forget you're wearing it by noon. Heirloom Cotton: Designed for Softness
Not all cotton is the same cotton. Where our woven cotton is about structure, our Heirloom Cotton, a signature 100% cotton knit, is designed to do the opposite. Pull one on for the first time, and you'll notice it immediately: it's soft right out of the gate, no "breaking in" required, and it stays that way wash after wash, year after year. Because it's a true cotton knit, it breathes in a way synthetic sweaters never manage, while still giving you just enough warmth to layer through fall. We built these to be genuinely machine washable, to hold their shape instead of stretching out by October, and to resist the pilling that turns a favorite sweater into a "just for home" sweater within a season. Sometimes the perfect fabric is cotton with a little help. Our Signature Stretch Cotton starts with 95% cotton and adds just enough spandex, 5%, to change how a piece behaves over the course of a real day. It keeps everything you already love about the natural cotton: the softness, the breathability. But it adds the give you actually need to sit through a long lunch, chase a toddler through a parking lot, or fold a dress into a carry-on and pull it out on the other side still looking like something. It's become one of our most requested fabrics for exactly that reason: it's the wrinkle-resistant, packable travel dress fabric that lets a natural fiber keep up with an unpredictable schedule, without asking you to trade away comfort to get there.
